ESHE - 5th Annual Meeting
September 10-12, 2015 - London, UK

The 5th Annual ESHE Meeting will take place at the British Museum from 10-12 September, 2015. The meeting will be followed by an excursion to Swanscombe and Down House on Sunday, 13 September. Spaces on the excursion will be limited and participants are encouraged to register early. The ESHE Meeting is hosted by the British Museum and the Natural History Museum, and local organization is thanks to Chris Stringer, Nick Ashton, Louise Humphrey and Josephine Mills.

	Closing Party - This year's closing party will take place in Hintze Hall at The Natural History Museum. This may be the last chance to party beneath Dippy the dinosaur before he retires in 2017. The price of the closing party is 40€ per person.

Sunday 13 September	Excursion: Down House and SwanscombePrice per person: 45€

This year's excursion will take participants to Down House in Kent and the archaeological site of Swanscombe. A buffet lunch at the George and Dragon Pub near Swanscombe is included in the price. The organizers recommend bringing a rainproof coat or umbrella for the excursion.

Down House
Charles Darwin lived at Down House with his family from 1842 until his death in 1882 aged 73. The house has been restored to its original condition, and the study where he wrote 'On the Origin of Species' is now as it was when he worked there. The extensive gardens can be explored including the famous “sandwalk” where Darwin took his daily walks. Several of Darwin’s experiments have been reconstructed in the gardens and heated greenhouse.

Swanscombe
The Swanscombe site is in north-west Kent, close to the south side of the Thames estuary. ‘Barnfield Pit’ was already famous for the finds of numerous handaxes and Pleistocene fauna when in 1935 and 1936 a human occipital bone and left parietal were recovered from the Middle Gravels. The articulating right parietal was discovered in 1955. The underlying Lower Loam contains Clactonian artefacts and both it and the Middle Gravels are assigned through geomorphology and mammalian biostratigraphy to the Hoxnian interglacial, correlated with Marine Isotope Stage 11 (~400 ka). The ‘Swanscombe skull’ is often regarded as one of the earliest members of the Neanderthal lineage.
A reference stratigraphic section will be exposed for the ESHE visit, and there will be displays of the human material, and artefacts and fauna from the site and surrounding regions.

Excursion Schedule

The Meeting Point for the excursion is at Montague Place (North side of the British Museum). The excursion will be split into two groups, the first will visit Swanscombe in the morning and Down House in the afternoon, and the second vice versa.

Expected arrival in London is 17:00 but there may be delays due to heavy traffic, so please do not rely on this arrival time for onward travel.

This year's registration fees also include a fully catered buffet lunch on all three conference days. In order to register for the London meeting as a member, you must first pay your 2015 membership fees.

Abstract Submission - Deadline April 30th

The deadline for abstract submission for the 2015 meeting in London is Thursday 30 April. Participants must first register for the meeting before submitting an abstract.

Please be aware of the following criteria for the evaluation of abstracts:

Abstracts must be in English and have a strict minimum and maximum character limit (minimum 2000 characters, maximum 4000 characters, with spaces).
Each first author can submit only one abstract.
We discourage simultaneous podium or poster presentations by the same group of authors on a similar topic.
Abstracts lacking in substance may not be accepted. All abstracts should have a clear description of the research with mention of methods and results.
Abstracts are evaluated using a peer-review, graded scale. Normally all papers are reviewed by 2-4 persons per subfield. The top papers are selected for the plenary sessions.
Accepted presenters will be notified in early July.
Due to time constraints, only a limited number of podiums presentations will be accepted. Therefore some authors not accepted for podium talks will be offered the option of presenting a poster.

Student Poster Prizes - Deadline August 24th

This year we have up to 3000 € available for student poster prizes. To be included in the running for a poster prize you must first submit your abstract via the online system, and check the box which states "Enter this poster in the Student Poster Competition". A pdf of your poster must be sent to abstracts@eshe.eu by Monday 24 August in order to be evaluated. **Please Note** To qualify as a student, participants must not have completed their PhD before the abstract submission deadline.

Student Travel Grants- Deadline April 30th

Following the success of the 2014 Student Travel Grants, the ESHE Board has decided to offer travel grants to students attending the 2015 ESHE meeting.

Criteria:

Applicants must be members of ESHE

Applicants must be presenting either a podium, pecha kucha or poster presentation at the 2015 meeting.

How to apply:

First ensure that you have registered for the 2015 meeting and have submitted an abstract.

Send a letter of financial justification to president@eshe.eu by Thursday 30 April. This letter must include: 1) Information on where you will be travelling from, 2) A list of your anticipated expenses, 3) Information on any other funds you already have at your disposal (i.e. grants, scholarships, stipends), 4) A short CV, maximum 1 page.

Information for Presenters

Poster Presentations

All posters must be in A0 Portrait format. Landscape format will not be accepted due to space requirements. Presenters are expected to print and bring their poster with them to the meeting. Presenters are responsible for hanging their own poster on the designated board.

Podium Presentations

The podium presentations are organized into 20 minute time-slots. Presentations are encouraged to be 15 minutes in length, with 5 minutes for questions and discussion. The session chairperson will be strict with the time limits. Presenters are encouraged to have their presentations ready on a USB drive, to be given to our IT assistants before the start of their session.

Pecha Kucha Presentations

Each Pecha Kucha presentation will be strictly limited to 6 minutes and 40 seconds, and must contain exactly 20 slides. These slides must be sent to abstracts@eshe.eu no later than Friday 4 September. The ESHE Organizers will then set the slides to display for exactly 20 seconds each.
